As the gifting expert at Baby and Mumma Gifts, and currently being in my third trimester of pregnancy myself, I thought I would take this opportunity to speak from my own personal experience about what pregnant women want in a gift. So instead of a usual list of products, I thought I would talk about what I have found useful and helpful during my own pregnancy, and use that to make recommendations about pregnancy gifts.
As I write this blog, I’m in the 34th week of my third pregnancy, so I have plenty of experience to rely on. I have been lucky enough to receive some beautiful gifts from my colleagues and friends, and also received some beautiful gifts during my previous pregnancies as well. I have also spent a great deal of time speaking to women asking them what they like to receive as gifts while pregnant.
I'd like to share three different categories of wonderful gifts for pregnancy:
I love this category because it focuses on gifts just for the pregnant mum, not just the baby. I have a whole section of gifts for pregnancy pampering, consisting of both hampers and individual gifts, make sure to check it out here. Here are a few of my favourites from this section:
Belly oil is designed specifically to be pregnancy safe and to help prevent stretch marks, as well as keeping the skin hydrated during pregnancy. As well as this, it also smells and feels luxurious and creates a special ritual for the mumma-to-be to connect with her pregnancy and her belly. I have used the gorgeous Mama and Bird Belly oil from this collection. I love the feel, the scent, and the way it makes my skin feel.
A pregnancy journal makes a great keepsake for the mum-to-be, and is a wonderful way for loved ones to show love and support. If your pregnant loved one is like me and already has other children, a pregnancy journal or other keepsake book can be a special connection between the mum and her baby. Find a pregnancy journal in this collection.
A pregnancy bath soak makes a lovely addition to a pregnancy gift. Filled with glorious scents and magnesium for relaxation, a pregnancy bath soak helps the mum-to-be with relaxation, self-care, and can also relieve some of the aches and pains associated with pregnancy.
While chocolate is not pregnancy specific, chocolate always makes a wonderful gift for a mum-to-be or new mum at any stage. She is never going to be disappointed to receive chocolate, and it always makes a great way to show your love, care and support.
When purchasing for a pregnancy mumma-to-be, especially if she is near the end of her pregnancy, it is a great idea to think about gifts that she will use for herself after the baby is born. Far too often mummas are forgotten in the gift giving process, and are also very much in need of love and support. You can check out our full collection of gifts for new mums here. Here are a few of my favourite items:
You can never go wrong with a little pampering for a new mum. Think about things like; face masks, bath soaks, luxurious skincare, candles, or essential oils. These all make special gifts as they help the new mum with her self-care during the postpartum period, when all her attention is otherwise on the baby. Check out our collection of products to pamper new mums here.
Depending on your relationship with the new mumma, you might think about some more practical items. These could include items to help make breastfeeding easier, postpartum recovery products, or lactation cookies. Each of these items are going to be appreciated by a new mum as they will be practical, useful and helpful at the time when she needs them the most. A good nursing balm is worth its weight in gold, and a healing sitz bath soak can really help a new mum post-delivery. I especially recommend these types of products to those who are very close to the mum-to-be, rather than work colleagues or acquaintances. Personally, when I was pregnant with my first I loved getting products like this from experienced mothers as they knew exactly what would be useful for me.
While I always advocate for buying a gift for the mum-to-be specifically, I know everyone also likes to buy something for the baby as well. Buying for baby is also beautiful, and the mum-to-be can really cherish some of the special gifts that they receive. Think about what the new parents will need for their baby, and you can choose to buy either cute gifts, practical gifts, or a combination of both. Check out our collection of baby gifts here. Here are a few of my favourite items for baby gifts:
When you’re looking for something practical, you can’t go past nappies and wipes. These will be used constantly, and many new parents are surprised by how many they need for their newborns. A lovely touch is to write some little messages on the nappies, so when the special new parents change the baby’s nappy they will see the messages of encouragement from their loved ones.
If you’re looking more at buying cute things, teddies and bunnies make a wonderful keepsake for the new baby. Both of my children have a special bunny that they were given at birth (or at my baby shower), and they both love and cherish the bunnies. They are also just adorable, making them a wonderful gift.
When it comes to clothing, you can think about both cute and practical. Zip Growsuits are one of the most practical items that the mum-to-be will need for her baby, and as an added bonus, they can come in super cute designs. You can also add super cute touches such as little hats, bows, socks, and matching swaddles. This way, you get to purchase something cute, the mum-to-be gets to open a cute gift, and you can also know that you are purchasing a gift that will actually be used.
I love purchasing gifts for those around me, and love being part of the gifting process for so many others when they buy gifts from Baby and Mumma Gifts, and I have also felt so loved and spoilt throughout each of my pregnancy journeys to receive beautiful gifts from those around me. I hope some of these ideas in this blog have been able to inspire you when looking for gifts for pregnancy!
